A lone player lit by monitor glow in a darkened room
Gaming Journalism · Fitzroy, Melbourne

The games that keep the lights on after midnight.

TapSentinelGrid is a Melbourne gaming desk shooting every review through a film-noir lens — long-form criticism, indie discoveries, and hardware teardowns for players who read past the score.

The Desk

Written in a Fitzroy back room, lit like a crime scene.

We started TapSentinelGrid above a record shop on Gertrude Street in 2018, tired of reviews that read like press releases. Every piece we publish is played to credits, not to the first checkpoint — and framed with the same care a cinematographer gives a rain-slicked alley.

The desk is four full-time critics and a rotating bench of contributors across Melbourne and regional Victoria. We buy our own copies, we disclose everything, and we chase the story behind the studio, not just the launch trailer.

What We Cover

Six desks, one grid.

From marquee AAA launches to the weird little demos that never leave itch.io, here is where our coverage lives.

Our flagship format: 2,500–4,000 word reviews published only after a full playthrough. Each carries a scored verdict, a performance breakdown across console and PC, and an accessibility rundown. New reviews land every Tuesday and Friday.

A weekly deep dive into Australian and international indies, with developer interviews recorded in-studio wherever we can reach them. Recent subjects include three Melbourne teams working out of the Arcade collective in Docklands.

Thermals, battery curves, and controller drift tested on the bench — not read off a spec sheet. We keep a lab of handhelds and capture cards and publish our full methodology so you can repeat the numbers.

Essays on speedrunning, preservation, arcade history, and the people who keep local scenes alive. This is where TapSentinelGrid slows down and asks why a game matters, not just whether it works.

Seasonal, no-nonsense guides priced in AUD and updated as sales hit. From a AUD $199 handheld starter kit to the best couch co-op under AUD $60, every pick is one we would actually spend our own money on.

A living log of post-launch patches, day-one performance, and broken promises. We revisit our scored reviews when a game changes substantially, and we tell you exactly what moved.

Reader Voices

The people reading past the score.

The only site where I read the full review before buying. Their "Neon Precinct" teardown saved me from a AUD $99 mistake and pointed me at something better.

As a solo dev, the Indie Spotlight interview brought me my first real wave of players. They actually played my game before we talked — you can tell.

The hardware bench numbers are the only ones I trust. They published their whole test method, so I could check it against my own handheld. It matched.

The culture essays read like proper film writing. I subscribed to The Dispatch after the arcade-preservation piece — worth every cent.
